3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Going To Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg Itinerary For A Fun Vacation

Gatlinburg is one of those destinations that everyone should visit at least once in their life. There’s so much to see and do, and the views are absolutely breathtaking. However, before you go there are a few things you should know. Here are three things I wish I knew before going to Gatlinburg.

If you're going to Gatlinburg driving is the way to go

Going to Gatlinburg? Avoid Doing What I did

In short, I wish I knew that driving to Gatlinburg is the best option – especially over flying to Knoxville. McGhee Tyson Airport is the primary commercial airport servicing the Gatlinburg area, located about an hour to the West. For a Uber ride, it’s $57 for UberX from the airport to Downtown Gatlinburg (time and party size will differ in price). So as you can imagine taking Uber everywhere can get expensive – not really an “affordable” family vacation at that point – especially if you rent a car right now. The prices are ridiculous, even for a short weekend trip.

Gatlinburg is located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, and driving allows you to see this magnificent area. In addition, this mountain town is located just a short trip from some of the other major cities in the Southeast, such as Atlanta, Nashville, and Charlotte. This makes it easy to combine with a visit to another city.

Let’s talk about Cades Cove

Gatlinburg’s Cades Cove is one of the most popular destinations in the Smoky Mountains National Park. Thousands of visitors come to see the majestic mountains, pristine forests, and abundant wildlife every year. However, this popularity can also be a downside. On busy days, the Cades Cove can become quite crowded, making it difficult to enjoy the quiet of nature. If you’re planning to visit Cades Cove, try to avoid peak times and weekends. It gets jam-packed! The Cades Cove Loop Road is closed on Wednesdays to all vehicle traffic from May 5th through September 1st. This provides bicyclists and pedestrians the opportunity to explore the Cove without vehicles. I had wished I knew that before driving there for the first time – on, you guessed it, a Wednesday!
